My Philosophy of Healing

It’s all interconnected isn’t it? The forces that shape our lives, the journey towards healing, how we find meaning and purpose, and that thing that happened that “broke us” yet in hindsight we come to understand that it was actually a catalyst in shaping who we are.

So many things have come to define me - a life long spiritual journey, my relationship with the divine, living in service to humanity and this beautifully sacred home planet called Earth. Every step of my own personal journey - including foundational traumas of abuse, abandonment, and neglect, decades spent struggling with depression, anxiety, obsessive and intrusive thoughts, an awful relationship with food and my body, topped off with being “different” in oh-so-many ways. It was that last part that made all the difference - being empathic, being sensitive, being attuned to the mystical and magical from a very young age also gave me a world I could inhabit beyond the heartbreak, and isolation of the human created world of business and bullying. That ability saved my life, and it shaped the healer I would become.

As a healer, I embrace the archetype of the Wounded Healer - understanding that our own journey is the road map to help and heal others. As a Holistic Psychotherapist, it is an honor to help guide folx through their own journey - being present with others tragedy and triumph is a blessing beyond words.

It is a joy to be a conduit for your journey to self-discovery, finding your most authentic, grounded self, embracing what make you unique, and transforming trauma and suffering into purpose and meaning. I firmly belief humans are imbued with the power to Co-Create the world - together let’s Co-Create a new version of you - one filled with magic, wholeness, and well-being.

Much Love,

Shelley

Holism: Emphasizing the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts.

An Elemental Approach

Mind: Air
Our cognitions (thoughts) are shaped throughout our life by various forces - understanding the origins of these thoughts and the power we have allowed these thoughts to have over our self-beliefs is critical in alleviating many of our most common mental health symptoms from anxiety to low self-worth.

Body: Earth

Most of us are not consciously aware that we even have a body! However many of our symptoms are carried in our bodies and it is the Central Nervous System of the body that responds to the world far sooner than our senses can. Learning to ground, and be present in our body is our greatest ally for our symptoms of dissociation, chronic worry, stress, mental focus, and on, and, on.

Water: Emotions
Have no fear, emotions are our friends! Emotion is the intelligence of the body, but most often what we think is an emotion we are feeling is often a thought pattern set on repeat. Learning to sit with and genuinely feel our emotions is vital to our healing - both in terms of mental and physical health.

Fire: Spirit
The fiery essence of YOU! Our life force and energy, our drives and ambitions, purpose and meaning - all the things we often sacrifice all too willingly on the mantle of the stressors in our lives.

let us add another element to better understand the wholeness of our being…

Social: The external world around us impacts us immensely and so often without our awareness. We are shaped by our culture, our family, our friends, schools, the zeitgeist of the time - so much so that we often mistake the social forces in our lives for our true core needs at the expense of the wholeness of our selfhood.

Therapy as Soul Work

·

Therapy as Soul Work ·

Hello, my name is Shelley Holloway and my work as a therapist is rooted in the intersection of all things, and a deep appreciation and understanding of the complexity of identity and the human spirit.

I provide individual psychotherapy to adults (18+ years of age) dealing with a wide range of psychological issues. My approach is collaborative, non-judgmental, irreverent and adaptable to the clients individual needs and goals.

While I provide individual therapy for a wide range of emotional, spiritual, and behavioral issues, much like other therapists and counselors - my specialization in trauma informed, spiritually integrative work with marginalized identities and spiritualities sets me apart.

My mission is to assist you in finding your most authentic "higher" self ("who you would be if no one was watching") in a collaborative, powerful and irreverent manner (who knew therapy could be funny!?).

While I am skilled in many therapeutic perspectives and utilize several traditional evidence-based treatment modalities, it is my own nontraditional theoretical orientation, lived experience and professional background that has culminated in a holistic perspective combining feminist & post-modern theory, recovery models, metaphysics, astrology, and intuitive processing. Whether you are a seeker or you are secular, our true sign posts will be your own Core Self that will lead us on a journey towards healing, connection, transformation and empowerment.

  • Therapy is a tool that helps us find healing from emotional pain, and a new set of skills for embracing life from a sense of empowerment. You are not alone! Many people find themselves experiencing symptoms of depression (low mood, apathy, low energy, feelings of numbness), anxiety (racing thoughts, fear, panic), or are struggling with loss, negative self-defeating thoughts and patterns, reliance on substances, or failed relationships; and feel that they want help with these overwhelming feelings but have lost hope and are without a source of strength.

Psychotherapy offers a gradual yet gentle process towards managing these life issues, helping you gain the insight and awareness needed for personal growth, and recovery from self-defeating behaviors.

The therapy process is individualized, and oriented to the needs of the client - a collaborative process intended to harness the power of human potential and the desire to thrive, not merely survive.

Many people come to therapy not knowing what to expect, and that's fine. I am your guide along this journey, and our task in the beginning is to slowly understand your self-identified issues of concern, your needs from the theraputic alliance (that's us), and the direction you are hoping to move towards. I welcome any questions, comments, or feedback you have along the way - afterall this is your journey. As your therapist, I will listen with focused attention, asking questions, offering insight, suggestions, and direction as needed; always with your freewill and betterment in mind.  As our work deepens, new levels of emotional catharsis, and shifting perspectives on life tend to emerge; and new levels of self-mastery unfold, with an overall sense of connection, empowerment, wholeness and emotional health being gained.

This greater sense of self-mastery happens as we make a commitment towards healing - integrating the lessons from your past, learn to stay present in the here and now, an learn to utilize your hopes and vision for your future as sign post that lead you towards ultimate fulfillment in this lifetime. You may be wondering if this is a difficult or painful process, I would say that this is no more difficult that suffering with the emotional pain you are already dealing with. Therapy works, when we work it; and those who put in the effort to heal will generally get more out of the process. The good news is, you can have trusted ally with you, who can inspire and challenge you when needed, and offer empathy and support as we work through difficult emotions like anger, resentment, shame, guilt, and loneliness. Tears happen! but suffering doesn't have to be forever...and who knows, you may just learn to enjoy the healing release of crying and find comfort in exploring your own inner landscape of feelings, thoughts, dreams, passions, longings...

  • I’m a Queer identified and inclusive, LGBTQ+ affirming practitioner, with full dedication to liberation for all!

  • I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) - which means that the State of Massachusetts recognizes that I have fulfilled all of the Master’s level educational training, skills attainment, experience, and dedication necessary to be a licensed and practicing legally within the parameters of the states authority.

Similar to an LICSW, which is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker

I hold a dual Bachelor’s degree in Psychology (with emphasis on Research & Neuroscience), and Gender Studies (with emphasis on the psychological impact of oppressed identities), with a Minor in Sociology from SUNY Purchase. I also studied at the Master Degree level at Smith College School of Social Work, with further training from Cambridge College in Holistic Mental Health Counseling.

My background experiences over 20+ years in Mental Health working in Adult Psychiatric Day Treatment, DBT group facilitation, Eating Disorder Residential Recovery, and Community Outpatient Mental Health have given me a diverse skillset and ability to work successfully with a wide range of identities.

Beyond formal education I am a life long student of the magical arts, tarot, astrology, energy healing, herbal and nutritional healing. Along with community organizing (LGBTQ+. Pagan Spiritualities, Body Positivity) activism and empowerment of marginalized identities.

On a personal level, I truly believe good therapists are born not made (credentials alone can not create the therapeutic alliance necessary for this work). My own life experiences with my own Mental Health and Eating Disorder Recovery, along with my identities as a Queer Pagan Larger Bodied person also informs my work
